THE FIRST CROSSING
The chimes of the church bells had been ringing for some time. He barely paid attention to them.
It was definitely a Sunday.
Small groups of people drifted towards the church. Somewhere in the distance, dogs barked.
Knots in his stomach and the smell of fear kept him moving. It had not rained the previous night.
He sank into the deep hollows of the footprints in the sand, each one a deep, dry basin to him.
Waddling across on his tiny flippers, his shell rocking with every effort, he knew it wouldn't be long before the sharp eyes of the predators circling the clear morning sky caught sight of him.
The vast turquoise expanse of the ocean stretched quietly before him. The soft melody of the waves and the shimmer of the morning sun on the water stirred a promise of safety deep within him.
In that fleeting moment of peace, time itself seemed to slow. He lingered in its quiet embrace.
Trails of broken eggshells lay scattered across the white sand. He guessed the other hatchlings had already moved on.
A sharp slice through the air. He didn't need to look up. Instinct screamed that the bird was diving.
With all his might he pushed, each grain of sand slipping beneath him as he fought his way forward. The sweet scent of home filled every heartbeat. The waves no longer sang to him. They thundered, calling him home.
The rush of wings grew louder.
The deepening shadow made the distance to the water seem even longer.
The last stretch became the longest.
A curling wave lifted him from the sand, and with a single splash, the water closed over him.
The roar of the world above softened into a muffled hush.
Above, the dark sweep of wings passed over the surface, searching a world he had left behind.
